Common Migraine Symptoms

Common migraine symptoms include:

  • A throbbing pain on one or both sides of your head;
  • An aura, which is characterized by the appearance of a bright shape, flashes of light, or blurred or blocked vision. It usually occurs in one eye and can be accompanied by facial numbness or tingling;
  • Pain that ranges from moderate to almost intolerable;
  • Nausea, vomiting, sensitivity to light and odors, and a temporary loss of appetite;
  • Feelings of lethargy, sadness, or depression.

Migraine symptoms vary for each person. It shouldn’t be assumed that a headache doesn’t qualify as a migraine just because most of the symptoms above aren’t experienced. Some people only experience one or two of the classic symptoms whereas others may suffer through most items on the list. Additionally, the symptoms may change for each attack. For example you might experience an aura during one attack but have no aural symptoms during a subsequent attack. It’s because of these inconsistencies that migraines are sometimes difficult to diagnose. That’s why it’s very important to keep track of your symptoms before and after an attack and their frequency; this information will help your doctor more accurately diagnose your condition and develop a treatment plan.
