What Is A Migraine Aura?

Although visual impairment is most commonly associated with auras there are other symptoms that indicate that an aura is being experienced:

Visual Impairments

  • Blurred vision;
  • Partial loss of sight;
  • Flashes of light and color;
  • A bright shape that blocks vision, usually only in one eye but sometimes both;
  • Geometric or wavy lines.

Motor Impediments

  • Partial paralysis;
  • Weakness or heaviness in the limbs on the side of the body where the headache pain occurs.

Sensory Impairments

  • Tingling or numbness in the facial area on the same side as the headache;
  • Smelling odors that don’t exist, for example flowers, car fumes, burning wood;
  • The feeling that body parts are distorted in shape and size, for example, having the sense that one hand is larger than the other.

Language Difficulties

  • Difficulty speaking;
  • Difficulty understanding what someone is saying;

Cognitive Problems

  • Disorientation;
  • Confusion.
